Natural Diamonds and Lab-Grown Diamonds

Natural diamonds are the result of carbon atoms that, when exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep inside the earth, form into rough diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are made in laboratories under the exact same conditions that create diamonds underneath the ground. Both diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties, meaning to the naked eye they are the same — the only difference is their origin. Distinguishing between the two requires sophisticated equipment specifically designed for identifying lab-grown diamonds.

Natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are graded according to the same characteristics, the 4C’s of diamond quality (carat, cut, color and clarity), which determine how much a diamond is worth. Lab-grown diamonds come with the benefit of being less expensive and are priced 30-50% lower than a natural diamond.

The 4 C’s of Diamonds

Carat

The carat weight of a diamond refers to its weight, and is a unique unit of measurement used exclusively for diamonds. As the carat size of a diamond increases, so does the price of the diamond increase, as larger diamonds are more rare. You will find more information on the total carat weight of each of our products in the diamond details tab on the individual product page.

Color

All diamonds are graded according to a color scale which ranges from D to Z and measures a diamond’s degree of colorlessness. Diamonds with less color are more valuable as they allow more light to pass through, and thus they release more brilliance. Lower-quality diamonds have a yellow tint which affects their ability to reflect light. Norrfolks sources high-quality diamonds with a minimum standard color grade G, which means our diamonds are nearly colorless and feature a great brilliance.

Clarity

Each individual diamond is unique and has naturally occurring characteristics, which are determined by its clarity. Diamond clarity refers to the grading of how many inclusions and blemishes a diamond has using a range from I3 (included) to FL (flawless). Less light will come from a diamond with many inclusions versus the clearer the diamond, the more brilliance it will emit. The rarity and value of a diamond therefore increase as these imperfections are not visible to the naked eye. Norrfolks uses a minimum standard clarity grade VS – which stands for very slightly included and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Cut

Cut The most important of the four C’s, the cut, refers to the balance of proportion, symmetry, and reflective qualities of a diamond, contributing to its overall sparkle and brilliance. The better a diamond has been cut, the greater the diamond’s ability to reflect and refract light. The higher the cut grade, the more light the diamond will reflect. At Norrfolks, we only source excellent cut diamonds, providing the highest level of brilliance.

Responsible Diamond sourcing

From our engagement rings and wedding bands to our fine jewelry, all diamonds we use are 100% ethically sourced. At Norrfolks, we guarantee to only use conflict-free natural diamonds in compliance with the Kimberley Process.

The Kimberley Process is an international certification scheme created to increase transparency and oversight in the diamond industry and to ensure that rough diamonds that are entering the market only originate from conflict-free zones.

We therefore partner exclusively with diamond suppliers that striclty adhere to the Kimberley Process, ensuring ethical labor practices and fair work conditions throughout the supply chain.

All Norrfolks lab-grown diamonds are sourced from scientific laboratories across the globe that adhere to social and environmental standards. We solely work with trusted diamond growers that meet our high quality standards. All of our lab-grown diamonds are thoroughly examined by certified gemologists.

Certifications

All of Norrfolks jewelry featuring single diamonds above 0.30ct are accompanied by either a GIA or IGI certificate. GIA and IGI are the most renowned industry bodies worldwide grading and certifying diamonds and gemstones. All our natural diamonds come with a GIA certificate while our lab-grown diamonds are certified by the IGI.

Your diamond certificate will include a report number, which is unique to your specific diamond and laser inscribed on the girdle of your diamond.

Diamond Shapes

Diamonds come in various shapes, below are our signature shapes synonyms to Norrfolks.

Round Brilliant Cut

The most popular and well-known of the diamond cuts is the round brilliant. The perfectly polished facets of a Round Brilliant cut diamond suit timeless looks as the shape and cut bring out a diamond’s maximum sparkle. The round brilliant is a real classic and guaranteed to never go out of style.

Oval Cut

An elongated version of the round brilliant cut that is bold, unique and offers plenty of sparkle. The Oval shape has an increased surface area, optimizing its carat weight and thereby often appears larger than round brilliants of the same carat weight.

Emerald Cut

A subtle and sophisticated shape featuring rectangular facets and beveled corners. The Emerald cut showcases a diamond’s pure color and clarity. The sleek, geometrical lines make for a modern look and adds the perfect amount of shine to any piece of jewelry.

Cushion Cut

A square shape with soft corners and round edges resembling a pillow — the Cushion cut is a classic shape with a timeless, romantic appeal. Because cushion cut diamonds have 58 facets they sparkle brilliantly and are perfect center diamonds for your vintage-inspired engagement ring.

Pear Cut

A timeless, highly sophisticated shape with a tapered silhouette. The pear shape is an attractive, elongated cut that offers a lot of brilliance and sparkle while creating an edgy balance between classic and contemporary styles.
