Diamond Clarity Explained

Diamond clarity refers to the presence or absence of natural inclusions and surface blemishes within a stone. It is one of the 4Cs — along with cut, colour, and carat weight — that determines both the quality and value of a diamond. Inclusions are tiny internal characteristics formed as a diamond grows. In naturally mined diamonds, these are the result of immense heat and pressure deep within the earth — no two are ever the same. Because of this natural variation, the diamond industry developed a clear grading system to describe and price each stone accurately. Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. Diamonds that have imperfections but still appear flawless without magnification are called “eye-clean.” Clarity, however, isn’t just a visual factor. A diamond with heavy inclusions may not only appear less brilliant, but can also be structurally weaker — more prone to chipping if worn daily or during active use.

The 4Cs: Clarity, Colour, Cut and Carat

Just as no two people are alike, every diamond carries its own unique character — shaped by nature and refined through craftsmanship. At Norrfolks, our diamond experts carefully hand-pick each stone to ensure it meets our highest standards of beauty, proportion, and brilliance. For those who prefer a more personal touch, we also offer the opportunity to select your own diamond, guided by our team’s expertise. Gemological institutions such as the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) use precise grading systems to describe a diamond’s qualities. These assessments are based on the 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity, and carat — the defining factors that shape a diamond’s beauty and value. Understanding these will help you appreciate both the craftsmanship behind your diamond and the care that goes into choosing it.
