Diamond Clarity Explained

Diamond clarity refers to the presence or absence of natural inclusions and surface blemishes within a stone. It is one of the 4Cs — along with cut, colour, and carat weight — that determines both the quality and value of a diamond. Inclusions are tiny internal characteristics formed as a diamond grows. In naturally mined diamonds, these are the result of immense heat and pressure deep within the earth — no two are ever the same. Because of this natural variation, the diamond industry developed a clear grading system to describe and price each stone accurately. Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. Diamonds that have imperfections but still appear flawless without magnification are called “eye-clean.” Clarity, however, isn’t just a visual factor. A diamond with heavy inclusions may not only appear less brilliant, but can also be structurally weaker — more prone to chipping if worn daily or during active use.

The Diamond Clarity Scale

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the clarity scale that grades diamonds from “Flawless (FL)” to “Included (I3)”. To assign these grades, professionals use 10× magnification to examine a stone’s internal and external characteristics — details far too small to see with the naked eye.

Choosing a Clarity Grade

When it comes to the 4Cs, the balance between budget, beauty, and lifestyle is key. For those seeking rarity, a D-colour, Flawless (FL) diamond is unmatched in purity — and represents an exceptional investment. However, it’s important to understand that different diamond cuts reveal inclusions differently. Cuts with many small facets, such as radiant or brilliant shapes, reflect light in ways that disguise minor imperfections. In contrast, emerald cuts have large, open facets that can make inclusions more visible, requiring a higher clarity grade for a clean appearance. If you’re working within a set budget, focus on finding a diamond that is “eye-clean.” For example, a VS1 diamond may technically contain inclusions, but they are invisible to the naked eye — allowing you to choose a larger stone without compromising on sparkle or durability. If size remains a priority, consider lab-grown diamonds. Because they are created under controlled conditions that replicate the natural growth process, they often achieve D-F colour and IF to VS1 clarity — delivering exceptional quality with a more accessible price point and a lighter environmental footprint.

Finding the Right Balance

Selecting the perfect diamond is about more than technical grades — it’s about proportion, style, and how the stone makes you feel. Think about what matters most to you: scale, cut, brilliance, or clarity. Complex shapes like emerald or heart cuts demand expert craftsmanship and often benefit from higher clarity to protect against internal weaknesses. Whenever possible, view your diamond in person or via high-quality video to appreciate how it performs in real light. This is the most authentic way to see its fire, brilliance, and character — ensuring it aligns with your vision for a piece you’ll wear for years to come. At Norrfolks, our experts hand-select each diamond to ensure exceptional purity and performance, whether you choose from our curated selection or prefer to handpick your own. The goal is simple: to find the diamond that feels like it was made for you — beautifully balanced, timeless, and true to the understated elegance of Scandinavian design.

Diamond Guide: Lab-Grown vs Natural

Diamonds are typically symbols of commitment, celebration, and personal meaning. Today, we have two equally compelling choices: lab-grown and natural diamonds. Both are real diamonds — identical in brilliance, durability, and beauty. The difference lies in their origin and the philosophies behind them. A natural diamond is shaped deep within the earth over billions of years, created by nature and revealed through human craftsmanship. A lab-grown diamond is formed through advanced technology that mirrors those same natural conditions, resulting in a stone with the same physical and optical qualities. At Norrfolks, we offer both, because we believe in the importance of choice. Every couple has their own values, aesthetics, and story. This guide will help you understand the distinctions so you can select a diamond that feels right for you — one that reflects your priorities and the meaning you want your ring to hold.
